MOUNT AGUNG (GUNUNG AGUNG)

MOUNT AGUNG (GUNUNG AGUNG)

The volcanic mountain known as Gunung Agung is the highest point in Bali. It is also one of the holiest place of the island: Rising to an altitude of 3’148 meters. Gunung Agung is believed to be a replica of Mt Meru, central axis of the universe, brought to Bali by the first Hindus.

Although you might be discouraged by the idea of climbing up there, rewards will be great for those who dare. It is a tough climbing: You start around 10 PM to be there at dawn, but there is also a way to climb and sleep at a camp on your way there. The view of the island on a rising sun is really something to experience!

There are two routes up the mountain: One starting at the Bekasih temple, the other from Pura Pasar Agung.
