“Strange fruit” is one of the most powerful poem put into song ever written, speaking of the horror in which black people were murdered in collective racist hysteria in the South.
A song so powerful it made J. Edgar Hoover’s ears bleed. A message expressing a pain so violent it inspired Samuel Grafton, a columnist for the New York Post, those words: “If the anger the exploited ever mounts high enough in the South, it now has its Marseillaise”.
Lynching in the US deep south are no longer the norm. But hate crimes are still a malignant cancer today. And “Strange fruit” resonates as an awfully modern sonic photography of how hate and fear make normal human beings do.
