Ebola Spreads Scare: Call for Awareness and Precaution

The world is on high alert following recent news that an Ebola victim died a few days after arriving in Nigeria, from Liberia. There isn’t clear information regarding whether or not the deceased man, Patrick Sawyer, came into direct contact with other passengers, or any other people during his flights, or wait period at the airport. Witnesses said that Sawyer was vomiting and had diarrhea aboard a plane carrying at least 50 other passenger. Health care officials are now in pursuit of tracking down passengers and flight attendants of the flights who may have been exposed to Sawyer.

This uncertainty caused a raise of concerns in Ebola outbreak worldwide, especially through international travels. Countries are advised to increase passenger screenings upon arrival, and put person with fever under a medical quarantine. Given the nature of international travelers coming into the country, Bali especially, the Health Ministry of Indonesia called for awareness and anticipation of the risk of Ebola spreads. Hospitals are said to have been prepared for early screenings of symptoms, quarantine facilities, and Bali especially have installed a number of thermal scanners on the island’s airport to detect passenger’s body temperature. WHO have also released a Global Travel Warnings to known countries where Ebola outbreaks detected, namely Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leonne. Any unnecessary travels to these countries should be avoided.

Ebola could be transmitted from one person to another via direct contact of the bodily fluids, included but not limited to, saliva, sweats, blood, and urine. Incubation period could take up to 21 days before an infected person started showing symptoms and becoming contagious. Typical symptoms presented in Ebola cases are sudden onset of fever, extreme fatigue, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, followed by vomiting, diarrhea, organ failure, and in some cases internal and external bleeding.

As of now, no known cases have been detected in other countries outside West Africa, however, preventative actions and precautions are advised. For more details on Ebola Outbreaks and Updates, visit www.who.int
