Sigmun: Powerful Concepts and Legendary Inspirations Combined Into Fierce Infectious Sounds

It's time to rock (again)! This week on Artist of the Week, we are super excited to present the infectious sounds of Sigmun, an Indonesian rock band which was formed in December 2011.

No, Sigmun is indeed not one of Bali's own talents. These guys happened to be on tour from their hometown, Bandung, and among the several cities, they also made a stop in Denpasar last weekend, and went ahead rocking the stage of Subway on Teuku Umar street, down town Depasar.

Sigmun consists of Haikal Azizi (vocal/guitar), Nurachman Andika (guitar), Mirfak Prabowo (bass) and Pratama Kusuma (drums) and together they seem to be hitting it off!

They started off as ‘LOUD' but later on they had to change their name due to the most common reason as on the other side of the globe, in England to be precise, there was another rock band sharing the same name since 1989. Given the situation, they decided to be good lads and changed their name into Sigmun, inspired by their fascination towards the infamous neurologist Sigmund Freud.

When they started off as LOUD, aside from obviously being loud, these guys were mainly influenced by the ‘founding fathers' of heavy metal Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Or, we can of course quote exactly how they passionately and respectfully referred to those legends' qualities as ‘the almighty Led Zeppelin and the god of heavy riffs, Black Sabbath'.

Given their influences, it may not come as a surprise that most of their songs are based on riffs covered with distortion and overflowing echoes. They sure do have their way with describing things in a cool yet clear way as they happen to describe their music sound as "bringing a high gain amplifier and drums into a cave".

You wanted some elaboration, you said? Alright; the bass lines of their music is almost progressive but at the same time also raw and primitive. The drumming moves fierce and violent on high tempo, yet all of a sudden it could turn into a clam drowning bluesy beat. The vocal sounds like chants and moans, which they admitted to be influenced by Plant and Ozzy.

As a band, together they religiously worship Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. However, as all musicians alive, all of them also have their personal music heroes and legends they look up to. All of their personal influences combined have added yet another level of complexity of styles turning into sounds, creating a whole new blend of ‘colors' that enriches their music as a whole.

Another distinguishing aspect of this band is the previously mentioned continuous interest in Sigmund Freud's concepts of the unconscious mind, accompanied with their love for the whimsical world of surrealism, all poured and noticeable in the lyrics of their songs.

They have layers of exploration presented through the figurative language they use in their lyric writing while enjoying the art of juxtaposition as well as what they call ‘absurdism'.

They shared that their work might have been influenced by Dali, Magritte, Chirico just as much as they have been musically influenced by Jimmy Page and Tony Iommi. No wonder the end result of the sound they bring to the world is definitely something with a strong character and powerful as intensely as it is infectious.

We can't wait for you to see the footage we got from their gig on the island we managed to catch along with the exclusive interview with these guys! In the meantime, their tracks will be played on our radio for two weeks straight (March 7 - 21, 2016) every day at 7 AM, 12 PM, 7 PM and 12 AM! We will reveal more about the interview and live session very soon! Keeping you posted for sure!
