Scared of Bums: Almost Thirteen Years of Incredible Music and Stories!
Scared of Bums is one of the names on the island which you might have seen quite a lot on either festival flyers, posters, compilation albums, or any other publication related to Bali's punk/rock/metal indie music scene. And if you happen to have been on the island for just long enough, you might be aware that their name has been around for over a decade now!
Meet this four piece consisting of Bocare on vocals and guitar, Arx on bass and throat, Poglax on lead guitar and Nova on drums; and together they go around rocking stages with their rather loud music, spreading their passion and messages that come with, under the name Scared of Bums!
This band was formed back in 2003, and started off carrying the name "Society Threat". However, as it often happens here and there, it turned out that the name they went by was also used by a band in California. Thus, they decided to change their name into Scared of Bums.
The core genre of their music is mainly influenced by the kind of melodic punk like the legendary punk band NOFX presents in their work. However, along with the changes and shifts in the band members as well as the variety of music influence they got in touch with over the years, they felt that their particular sound has evolved into a sub-genre which can be called Melodic Core.
They also added that they picked up quite some influence from the legendary sounds of one of the world's most respected heavy metal bands, Metallica, and also well-known Canadian punk rock/ alternative band, Sum 41.
Scared of Bums has a strong commitment to keep on moving forward in their creative process and actually prove that they are indeed able to maintain their band's presence and contribution in the island's music scene, on the nationwide level, and even internationally. They have their own particular way of stating that intention; "Never give up, let's turn on a fire". That is their motto that has served them well in keeping themselves going, in an incredible spirit!
Living and creating by that principle, these guys succeeded to make their next defining step in their music career as they launched their first self-titled debut album in January, 2007.
In the same year, they also won the first position in a national indie band battle called LA Lights Indie Fest 2007. This success granted them the opportunity to contribute in a compilation album which featured 10 indie bands from all over Indonesia which was released related to this festival. Their tracks were further on also featured in various compilation albums over the years.
They were also honored to perform as the opening act for concerts by international artists such as Rufio (Russia), Simple Plan and New Found Glory (USA), MXPX (USA) and Skid Row (USA).
In 2013, the band released their sophomore album entitled Let's Turn On a Fire, marked and celebrated by the album launch concert they held, which was also utilized as the opportunity to launch the video clip of the single of the same title.
They continued that very year which was already filled with satisfying achievements with their first Asia tour to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Their music was later on also selected as soundtrack to a movie entitled Janggan (Kite), and over the months they also released more video clips which received a great response from their fan bases everywhere.
Their most recent participation in a compilation album is rather special as this powerful compilation album called "Bali Bergerak!!!" is a collection of work from a list of well-respected conscious bands and musicians, produced as a part of the Bali Tolak Reklamasi movement, one of the biggest movements happening on the island these days; the fight against the Benoa Bay reclamation project.
Their single featured in this album is titled "Kepalkan Tangan Kiri" which translates into 'make a fist of your left hand'. The single is taken out of the band's second album. They are very excited and proud to be part of this crucial movement ever since the very initial steps where the movement had just begun.
The band is currently very busy, as always, to prepare new work to share with all of us. They are working on their third album, which they said might either be an EP or full-length album. They also have a special project in progress! They are preparing a band documentary DVD to be released on their 13th anniversary on May 20, 2016.
Through this DVD, the band will introduce two of their latest videos which will not be released online, and of course given the nature of the DVD, they will reveal lots of behind the scene stories.
Though there are already a lot of stories and achievements shared here, we do look forward to having these guys for an interview session at our studio and tell us more of those experiences they have lived in their almost 13-year adventure in this band! And yes, we are excited to enjoy a rockin' live session for sure too!
Their tracks will be played on our radio for two weeks straight every day at 7 AM, 12 PM, 7 PM and 12 AM! We will reveal more about the interview and live session very soon! Keeping you posted for sure! Stay tuned and check them out, and support our local musicians!
