John & the Jail Story: A Country Rockabilly Band from Bali
This week on Artist of the Week, we have decided to direct our spotlight right at the country rockabilly sounds coming from a band based here in Bali. And yes, they are going all out with their music style, that’s for sure!
Meet John Lano on guitar and vocals, Iwan Andrean on lead guitar, Jay on bass and Andre on drums, and together they are John & The Jail Story! Why the Jail Story? Of that, we are not quite certain of just yet. But we promise we’ll ask them when we meet them for the interview and live session at our studio very soon!
This band was formed back in 2013 and they have been busy with live regular gigs at venues around the tourism areas of the island ever since. Not long after these guys got together, they have also released their debut full-length album entitled “A Broken Heart Story”.
Through their profile, the band shared that the raw country sound carried in their tracks is highly inspired by some of the most influential legends of country music’s roots, such as Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings, to name a few.
All the tracks in A Broken Heart Story are in English, and given their music style, if we just happened to hear one of their songs on the radio without knowing the band, it would be a safe bet to say that most of us would not have thought that they are a local band based in Bali.
Considering there are not so many country rockabilly bands in Bali, John & the Jail Story does make a nice addition to the number of bands in the rather minority genres in the island’s indie music scene.
We will definitely share more about them during the interview and live session which will be broadcast on Sunday, November 29, 2024 at 10 PM Bali Time. The show’s re-run on the following Sunday at the same time!
In the mean time, tune in for the five top tracks from album, four times a day for two full weeks at 7 am, 12 pm, 7 pm and 12 am Bali Time! Enjoy this taste of country rockabilly with all their enthusiasm and stories; from Bali!
