KUNINGAN

KUNINGAN

Kuningan is the day that marks the end of the festive season on the island. On this day, ceremonies and rituals are held in the temples to pay respect to the ancestors who are leaving to return to their own world. The ceremonies are colorful, soulful and pretty similar to Galungan in most ways. Rituals for the same purpose are also held in family shrines of each Hindu household, ending the spiritual days by once again acknowledging what the whole season has been about.

The celebration, both rituals and social aspects of it, are not far different from Galungan. Only this time the sentiment might be a bit different as this means that holiday is over.

Where to go:

Once again both Galungan and Kuningan can be experienced all around you, as long as you step out from your hotel or resort gates. But if you want to be part of this celebration and blend into its colors and joy, then it is highly recommended that you go to a temple before noon. Any temple really. But the more high profile the temple, or the more high populated the area, the more happening the celebration will be. The most iconic temples of the Island like Tanah Lot Temple or Besakih Temple will most certainly be simply breathtaking.

Penampahan Galungan

PENAMPAHAN GALUNGAN Etymologically, the meaning of “penampahan” literally corresponds to what the day is actually all about. Penampahan means slaughter, and yes, Penampahan Galungan is the exactly one day before the big Galungan celebration, of which the main agenda is to slaughter pigs for the next day’s festive traditional ...

Galungan is the probably one of the most festive annual religious celebration for the Balinese Hindu. And when I say annual, I am talking about the Wuku Calendar, which in the Gregorian calendar equals to 7 months.   Galungan is about all that’s glorious. It’s about Sang Hyang Widi coming down to earth, ...

Manis Galungan is the day right after Galungan, normally spent enjoying a day out with the family. There are no specific rituals or temple ceremonies on this day, but you can totally notice that it is holiday season marked by the streets will be flooded by happy families off to a picnic, beach, family visit or anything fun really, that the ...

PENAMPAHAN KUNINGAN Penampahan Kuningan is the day before the actual celebration of Kuningan, which is the day that marks the end of the festive season on the island, by the departure of the ancestors, back to their own world. Just like Galungan, Kuningan never misses the part of the local culinary tradition involving lots of pork, ...

MANIS KUNINGAN Manis Kuningan is the day after Kuningan where people spend their time with their family and loved ones, mostly in their hometown. Pretty similar to Manis Kuningan, there are no religious ceremonies during this day yet you can most certainly notice the festivity and more colorful version of the island while you see people ...
