Sex, Drugs, and HIV – Part 2: Get On With Your Lives
Answering call for help in regards to the increasing number
of young men in Bali dying of HIV/AIDS, Steve Wignall, along with concerned
residences of Bali established a facility to accommodate and encourage anyone,
young gay men especially, to feel comfortable coming in to get help. Founded in
2011, Bali Peduli has been helping the young community in Bali to get tested, treated,
and manage their lives with the disease.
Shame and stigmas clouding the awareness of understanding HIV/AIDS is still a
big factor in getting people to come out and getting themselves tested. The
fact that they might have to disclose the fact of their sexual orientation doubles
the obstacles. Knowing this, Bali Peduli allows visitors of their clinic to use
fake name or remain anonymous, and they will still get the full service of
helps offered from the clinic. Their campaign slogan “Get Tested, Get Treated,
Get On with Your Life,” sends a message to the public that when diagnosed
early, treatments works best to preserve patient’s life expectancy just as well
and as long as normal healthy people.
