THE DROP: Garut is King of the Cup
The barrels get bigger every year and this year looked to be the biggest yet for the 11th annual Rip Curl Padang Padang Cup, the longest running surf competition in Indonesia. Beating out 2012's champ Chris Ward and heavy Hawaiian Kekoa Bacalso was Garut Widiarta who was crowned king of the cup for 2014 and it would have stayed in the family as he duked it out in his final heat with Raditya Rondi.
Cousin's Garut Widiarta and Raditya Rondi performed superbly in the 24 hours mother nature delivered a 6-8 ft solid swell that seemingly came out of nowhere. Day 2 of the Padang Cup was firing, maybe with help of prayers from the contestants and Rip Curl contest holders or the super-moon in Aquarius. Whatever the answer was behind the waves of perfection the local surfers of Bali delivered on call with the finals being dominated by an all Indonesian cast with Lee Wilson and Mustofa Jeksen both coming in at 3rd place showing some high performance barrel riding and how it's done at home.
Spectators were everywhere, perched along the cliffs of the Bukit and sprawled out on Padang beach while the events first live broadcast brought the wild barreling action to viewers with laptop computers, smart phones and various HD screens worldwide. It was no short of amazing for those of us who couldn't be at Padang Padnag or who were driving up on the way to the comp but didn't want to miss a second of the action and didn't have to with the help of Bali's 3G or WiFi connection.
But if did you missed the action check out THE DROP on Baliradio.net because we've caught it all here for your viewing pleasure.
