Bali: Amokrane Sabet Shot Dead in Canggu
For the past few hours (05/02/16), local online news portals and social media has been flooded by sources of breaking news, angles of comments, amateur videos and most recent updates related to the tragic incident of the death of Amokrane Sabet (49) and Anak Agung Putu Sudi, a member of the North Kuta Police.
Amokrane Sabet, a French national, was reportedly shot dead by police officers around Berawa, Canggu area after getting involved in a violent dispute which happened this afternoon, Monday, May 2, 2016. Sabet allegedly stabbed the victim on the police's side repeatedly which resulted into eight stab wounds which killed the officer.
Local newspaper Tribun Bali, reported that both the Badung Police Chief Tony Binsar as well as Head of Bali Police Irjen Pol Sugeng Priyanto confirmed the incident but did not reveal many details. As reported, Head of Bali Police made the statement that Sabet was shot to death after he ignored the warning shots.
The incident reportedly happened when the North Kuta Police and Mobile Brigade officers were at the location to arrest Sabet after he has reportedly torn up and ignored the previous summons issued by the local police.
The summons was reportedly issued as result to the many complaints and reports made by Canggu business owners and citizens whom he reportedly got into conflicts with. This Canggu resident who was also an ex Mix Martial Art (MMA) fighter better known by the name Kiane Sabet, was reportedly blacklisted by a list of businesses in Seminyak and Canggu area.
This particular news of the summons being torn up made Sabet the headline of one of the island's newspapers less than a week ago, making his face more familiar to the island's residents outside of Canggu. The news went viral on social media while being added with comments and personal experiences shared by netizens, and sadly, followed as much as ended by today's tragic end.
While the Police Spokesperson hasn't revealed more detailed information yet, the internet is filled with videos of the incident. Some of them are clear enough to witness how the last one and a half minute of the incident went down. The internet is now packed with public opinion that got formed based on the videos shared, among others the one published on local news portal Tribun Bali.
