Filastine
Last month during the Bali Spirit Festival's One World One Stage concert we were definitely spoiled with so many different types of great music, brought by talented and soulful musicians from different continents. And in that impressive line-up there was this well respected name of FILASTINE too! That was the very first time for us to catch their live show, but of course we were already familiar with the cool work they have created. We are happy to announce Filastine as this week's Artist of the Week!
Meet Grey Filastine, born in the United States but long-term resident of Barcelona, Spain, and Nova Ruth from Java, Indonesia.
Filastine is an audio-visual collaboration, making a new form of transnational bass music that collides the lowest frequencies of dubstep with the highest-level beat science, voice, acoustic strings, and lo-fi street noises.
Performing up to a hundred concerts per year, Filastine uses percussion to control loops and synchronized video from a heap of electronics wired to an amplified shopping cart Nova sings in Javanese, raps in a variety of languages, and plays melodica and drums. They have performed on so many different venues around the world in front of such different audiences too, and the thing that all this places have in common is that these two always manage to get this great response from the music lovers.
Before making electronic music Filastine played with the Infernal Noise Brigade, a marching band he founded for the Battle of Seattle. He continues to use audio as a tool for political intervention with the Sound Swarm, an orchestra of bike-mounted megaphones conducted by pirate radios transmitters. And Nova maintains many projects within Indonesia, including two acoustic bands, AjÈr and Mimimintuno. She runs a cultural space called Legipait in her hometown of Malang and organizes art expositions, micro-concerts, and readings. Nova worked for years with Engage Media, a social justice and environmental video site for Asia-Pacific.
Filastine's debut record, Burn It, was released by DJ Rupture in 2006 to much critical acclaim: ìFilled with both jagged edges and moments of sad sweetnessÖ Burn It is sure to win fans across multiple scenesî- XLR8R. The album ricocheted around the world, licensed and re-released by labels in France, Japan, and the US. The follow-up album, Dirty Bomb, dropped in 2009 through an alliance of labels led by French electro-dub imprint Jarring Effects. Prefix Mag called it ìthe prototype of globalized urban soundÖ It will devastate your subwoofer.
Spring of 2012 Filastine delivered the LOOT, Filastine's third full length work.
Tune in to listen to the tracks for a whole week long at 9 a.m., 12 a.m., 7 p.m, and 00 a.m. And a full hour on Sunday at 4pm! Enjoy, guys!
