Tis The Season
We just celebrated Halloween, and Thanksgiving and Christmas is coming up soon. It’s quite surprising to see how epic Halloween is celebrated here on the island. Adopting western culture, Halloween started being celebrated in Bali since more than 5 years ago. It’s quite new, it’s very well embraced, and it’s super fun.
However not everyone is as excited as us Halloweeners. Some people simply look at it as just another to go out partying. In a way it makes total sense. This is Bali, an island with never ending parties – except this time, you’re in a costume.
I love Halloween, but at the same time feel that Halloween in Bali is a bit odd. You go out to clubs or friend’s party all dressed up, doing the exact same thing you always do on a Friday night. Halloween is supposed to be this magical festive moment where the entire neighborhood is decorated and you go walk around door to door, shouting “Trick or Treat”. We don’t have that here.
This is more of a Holiday for kids, for all things creepy, for candies and treats. I noticed most international schools and play center threw Halloween events, and most requires quite a large sum of entrance fee – something the locals would most likely refrain paying for. From this alone it’s easy to see that this is something geared specifically from foreigners, something most of the local children aren’t expected or invited to join in.
We’re missing trick or treats and the festivities of Halloween. These children have spoken. They would love to have everyone celebrate on the streets, shouting trick or treats, go home counting candies.
Obviously we cannot force feed this western culture to anyone, but I think it would be pleasant if next Halloween, we set up an arrangement for people and businesses to participate in trick or treating – and get the local kids to join in the candy hunting on Halloween – free of charge.
Not only we would have the true essence of Halloween, but in a way give back to the community by creating something every children can enjoy. With or without costumes, I’m sure any kids no matter what cultural background they’re from, will absolutely enjoy shouting trick or treats and getting candies in their bags.
It’s a mission, folks. Let’s make it happen.
