Together with Pura Tanah Lot, Pura Uluwatu is the most recognizable symbol of Bali.

It is believed that a smaller temple existed before, but it was expanded during the 11th century. The temple protects Bali against the evil spirit of the ocean. Pura Uluwatu is striking, not only by its beauty, but foremost for its location:

The temple is perched up on a 70 meters cliff on the ocean. The best time to visit is at sunset, when the sun meets the ocean in a green, orange, and red symphony of shadows and light. Sarong and Sash are available at the entrance.

Once again, beware of the monkeys! They are very cute furry balls, but also some pretty gifted stealers. So put your glasses in your pocket, avoid wearing earings and hold firm to your camera or anything you have: Even though there are warnings on the site, they are fast and your stuff will be gone in a blink of an eye.
