TIRTA GANGGA
Somewhere in the beautiful east side of Bali, just 15 minutes away from the
calm and friendly capital of Karangasem regency named Amlapura, there is a
jewel of cross-culturally influenced architecture to be found. This particular
gem is a water palace called Tirta Gangga.
Built in 1948 by the last Karangasem Raja, the Water palace of Tirta Gangga is
a graceful maze of pools and fountains surrounded by stone carvings and statues
in a stunning mix of Balinese and Chinese style.
The water garden is divided in three parts. The first one shelters two pools
and water reservoir, the second one consists of a number of pools, and the
superior one dominating the rest of the area are the royal residences. The name
means Water of the Gange and. It was destroyed in 1963 but has been restored.
For a few thousand rupiahs, you can take a bath in the pools. The area offers
one of the many magnificent views of rice paddies in Bali.
Legend has it that when bathing in one of those pools during the full moon, you
will be blessed with lasting youth and illness are cured too! Sounds like a
great deal!
