TANAH LOT TEMPLE (PURA TANAH LOT)
Each one was built within eyesight of the next and form a chain along the south-western coast of the island. Proudly perched on an off-shore rock shaped by centuries of ocean tireless fury, Tanah Lot has been part of Balinese mythology for centuries.
It was built around the XVth century by a priest called Niratha. The holy man was seeking for a place to worship the Sea Gods. The legend has it that some religious leader, jealous of Niratha’s popularity, demanded that he leave the island. Niratha literally left the island and relocate the rock where it stands now! The temple’s rock is inhabited by sacred - but venomous- sea snakes (don’t worry, you should be fine if you don’t go plunging your hand in the first hole you see) protecting the island against evil spirits and invaders.
It is indeed a magical place, even though you will have to get past the not-so-spiritual alley of stores waiting for tourists. Nonetheless, a sunset in Tanah Lot remains a must-see in Bali. You may want to avoid the crowd by walking behind the parking lot along the path and walk down the cliff to get there by the beach (only possible when the tide is low).
