LAKE TOBA

Lake Toba is a lake set in the crater of a super-volcano in the province of North Sumata. The lake is 100 kilometers long, 30 kilometers wide, and 505 meters deep, with a surface elevation of about 900 metres. The lake is around 1,000 km² larger than Singapore! Imagine that! Or to put it in another way, the lake is as long as a drive from Uluwatu on end of South Bali all the way to Lovina on the north tip of the island is. And to put that in time, that is about 3 hours driving! So, there you go. That is how massive this lake is.

Given the explanation above, it would not really come off as a surprise that this lake also holds the titles of the largest lake in Indonesia and the largest volcanic lake in the world. Studies have shown that this lake was formed from a gigantic volcanic eruption occurred 69’000-77’000 years ago with some massive repercussions on the climate. This explosion is believed to be the largest explosive eruption on earth in the last 25 million years.

In the middle of the lake, lays an island called Pulau Samosir, which also happens to be the center of culture of the indigenous Batak tribe who live around the area as well as spread around North Sumatra. The rich culture combined with the very chill atmosphere makes this place simply perfect for those who love to be out in the nature and in proximity of the local culture and people. The place is also perfect for jungle trekking.
