GALUNGAN

GALUNGAN

GALUNGAN

Galungan is the probably one of the most festive annual religious celebration for the Balinese Hindu. And when I say annual, I am talking about the Wuku Calendar, which in the Gregorian calendar equals to 7 months.

Galungan is about all that’s glorious. It’s about Sang Hyang Widi coming down to earth, it’s about the ancestors coming down to visit, it’s about the victory of Dharma (good) against the Adharma (evil) and over all just like any other traditional or religious holiday seasons, it is a lot about spending time with your family and loved ones.

Even though Galungan is a family related festivity in the privacy of their homes, Bali shows off the festivity of the season by all the beautiful bamboo poles decorated with ornaments made out of young coconut leaves and other natural items, known as penjors, all along the roads throughout the island.
Women prepare offerings made out of fruits and food made out of the prettiest colors, and you can see them carry it on their heads while walking to the temples in their fabulous traditional outfit, consisting of kamen (some kind of sarong) and kebaya (the beautiful blouse often made out of silk or lace).

Where to go:

Once again Galungan is all around you. But if you want to be part of this celebration and blend into its colors and joy, then it is highly recommended that you go to a temple. Any temple really. But the more high profile the temple, or the more high populated the area, the more happening the celebration will be. The most iconic temples of the Island like Tanah Lot Temple or Besakih Temple will most certainly be simply breathtaking.
