Green Books: How Would You Like to be an Eco Librarian?

Green Books: How Would You Like to be an Eco Librarian?

Before we go any further, I’d like to first introduce you to a new NGO called Green Books. Founded by Petr Hindrich, with the help of a group of friends, Green Books selects books about the environment, purchases them directly from the publishers at a discounted rate, and then place them in a library for children in rural areas to read. They call these libraries the “Eco-Library”. I like the ring of that.

What is the purpose of spreading out these books exactly, and why is Green Books different from the many environmental activists NGO in Bali? Well, for once they are not trying to go around campaigning and telling people about environmental issues and what’s to be done about it. They are not here to tell children what to do. They’re here to encourage children to read; specifically about the environment, in order to plant interests, curiosity, love for the environment so that they would start noticing and learning about their own surroundings while having the knowledge to act accordingly. Quite a good strategy I would say.

Seeing as the books they placed in these Eco-Libraries are so much fun, colorful, and most of them are comic books, I suspects the kids would be lining up to read them. I know I would.

Some of us grow up reading comics about super heroes and we dream of having super powers. The children who read environmental books would hopefully grow up wanting to be heroes for the environment, and humanity.

As a new organization, Green Books have accomplished quite a lot in their first years. About 8 Eco-Libraries throughout the country has been established. They need more Eco-Libraries, and you can help.

Green Books are looking for people interested in being their Eco-Librarian to provide a place to host and manage the books, as well as organizing activities for the children within the vicinity. Book worms with love of comics should quickly apply on their website www.green-books.org

In the mean time, look for Green Books in future events, and you can participate in purchasing their books in the “Buy One Donate One” program. A little bird told me they will be at Trash Stock event in Bali!
