SIGHTSEEING

Bedugul

Bedugul

Sometimes you just need to get away from it all, from the kutas, the bintang singlets, the 'yes, transport' and seminyaks or the parties that lurk around the corner come every high season or friday night. Its all fun and fantasitic but when you do feel the urge or itch I am more than happy to let you know that there is a quick fix close by.

I was at that point recently, where the itch for a change of scenery was strong, as it is when the weekends roll around and time away meant the further the better.  The need to get away led me a little town just 50 km north of Denpasar. A couple of hours and I was worlds away and it may be just the thing you need if your seeking peace, quiet and some added extreme sports in nature.

Bedugul is the large area of the central highlands of Bali with the three crater lakes of Bratan (Beratan), Buyan and Tamblingan lacing the town.

If nature and being in nature is what you're after the waterfalls may interest you. Munduk Waterfall just 1 km west of Munduk market is said to be the most impressive on the island and roars in the wet season. Gitgit or the 'Twin Falls' is a personal favorite and the spirit of adventure and extreme sports are alive and well if you'd like to explore the falls via a canyoning tour in this area. It's the ultimate outdoor adventurer's wet dream that will have you abseiling, sliding down natural slops, jumping down and showering under the falls, where you'll feel like your in some kind of enchanted hidden place at the heart of Bali.

Other adventures could include trekking in the mountains around the lakes, like Mount Batur, the Bali Treetop Adventure Park or dipping into some hot springs 20 km south of Bedugul in the Angseri hot springs. If you want somthing a little more relaxing for the men in your life maybe a round of golf and stay at the beautiful Bali Handara, a stunning establishment that's been around since the 1970's with a great course, would be an ideal place to stay and relax on the green.

Before you leave make sure you grab some fresh strawberries to take home at the Bukit Munsu or Bedugul Traditional Market in Candi Kuning, being a focal point of the area and you can't miss the giant strawberry monument. There is a lot to see in Bedugul, a spot known for growing fresh produce, where 50,000 rupiah will give you a big bag of vegetables so organic and at such a good deal you'll be craving for more.

But whatever you decide you can't go wrong. It's close enough for a day trip and there is enough to do if you wanted to spend a week canyonning down the falls, visitng temples by the lakes, munching on strawberries or give yourself any excuse to slip on some winter clothes. To this I say yes transport, yes.

SANGEH MONKEY FOREST

Sangeh is a small forest with giant nutmeg trees, located in the Sangeh countryside, north of Denpasar, and home to the Puri Bukit Sari Sangeh.
