ADRIEN-JEAN LEMAYEUR

'Adrien-Jean Lemayeur came to Bali in 1932 and first settled in Denpasar. As many artists after him, he simply fell in love with Bali and what was supposed to be a 8 months stay, became a lifetime decision when he met Ni Pollok, a 15 year old girl who was famous for being the most talented Legong dancer in Bali. She later became Lemayeur’s model for his paintings.

In 1933, he put together a successful exhibition of his paintings which encountered great success and helped making him famous. After his return from Singapore, he bought a piece of land in Sanur and built a house. After Lemayeur’s death in 1958 in Belgium, Ni Pollok returned to Bali and donated his house to the Indonesian government, which became the Lemayeur museum until her death in July 1985 at age 68.

Their home has been kept in the same condition as it was when it was Ni Pollok and Lemayeur’s home where his works are exhibited, as well as his collection of traditional Balinese art, local items and Lemayeur’s personal collection.
