Borobudur

Borobudur

Located in Central Java, the Borobudur temple is an 8th century monument and a World Site Heritage.

It is one of the most beautiful Buddhist temples in the world. Borobudur was abandoned during the decline of Buddhism and Hinduism in Java during the 14th century. Forsaken in the deep jungle, Borobudur was rediscovered by the British in 1814.

It has been restored between 1975 and 1982 and is now a World Heritage Site. The monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. At the center of the top platform, the main dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa.

The monument is both a shrine to Buddha and a pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. The best way to visit Borobudur is to arrive before dawn and witness nature’s wake up for a sunrise that will change lights color and atmosphere almost every minute. Despite the crowd, you will marvel at Borobudur’s magnificent architecture set in the middle of a ballet of colors, mist, shadows and sounds.
