Surfing on Cloud 9

Surfing on Cloud 9

You may have heard or the infamous wave, seen for a quick minute in the opening scenes of Francis Ford Coppola's classic 'Apocalypse Now'. The hollow right hander discovered recently in the late 1980s and named after a candy bar is the one of the sweetest right handers on the plant.

But don't let the sweet origins of the name fool you as 'Cloud 9' in Siargao, Philippines delivers heavy tubes. This year is extra special as the annual Siargao Cup is getting more attention as it's the next stop on the ASC or Asian Surfing Championship circuit. This year the event is co-sanctioned with the Association of Surfing Professionals or ASP as a 1 star event, where up and coming international surfers get to compete on the qualifying series level.

The event on the tear drop shaped island will see surfers crying, both tears of joy and pain at one the best right hand peaks. With only a couple of guys in the line up during the event the nickname 'Crowd 9' becomes irrelevant, but the coral does still lurk come low tide. Some local surfers (like Dede Suryana who came in 3rd place at Sairgao last year) fly over to compete and surf this event with anticipation of tearing up the right hander while praying for some favorable NE winds.

The Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup will commence from the 24-28th of September this year with $15,000 in prize money to be fought over.
