Sightseeing: Jatiluwih

Sightseeing: Jatiluwih

Located in the plateaus of Watukaru Mountain of the Tabanan regency, the favorite UNESCO world heritage site of Jatiluwih unfolds from the foot hills of the mountains (some 700m above sea level) stretching to the coastal fronts of the island.

The rice terraces are that go for miles in the heart of Bali resemble a miniature grand canyon of green on the island. Jatiluwih, translated from Balinese dialect as 'beautiful teak', is a testimony to agricultural ingenuity with the 'subak' irrigation system and preservation.

The local community is discouraged from random and illegal clearing of land for commercial development. While the development of hotels and other commercial buidlings are not illegal, it must be done in accordance to the law and predetermined 'master plan' with the welfare of the people in mind.

You can take a stroll along the rice feilds and even enjoy a meal overlooking the terraces before journeying down the man made valleys in this serene part of western Bali.  Just 48 km from Denpasar this destination has been kept unique  with religious ceremonies at the Pentani temple (Kliwon Ugu on the Balinese calendar) being a center of worship in the area to the God in manifestation as agriculture soverignity.

So if your looking for a bit of greenery and a change of scenery head to Jatiluwih and don't forget to indulge in the organic rice while your'e there!
