Positive on Rabies, Nearly Negative on the Vaccine Supply!

Positive on Rabies, Nearly Negative on the Vaccine Supply!

The provincial government of Bali has worked on a set of programs to achieve a rabies-free status for Bali for quite some time now. They even set this target to call Bali rabies-free in the beginning of 2015, and took dramatic measures in the process, which also gained protests from communities and organizations who were against the animal cruelty involved in the efforts to clean the streets from stray dogs.

Regardless the (in some cases extreme) intense hard work put in by the related government agencies, as widely known, Bali is nowhere near to be ‘rabies-free’.Quite in contrary, the island is on alert as the number of rabies positive cases has even increased in the past months.

Another unsettling fact is that the rising number of demand to the rabies vaccine or locally better known as VAR (Vaksin Anti Rabies) on the island has officially led to a situation where the VAR is actually rare.

Bali is quite known to be one of the locations in Indonesia with so many stray dogs, or dogs in general, and it can’t be denied that there are cases in which the dog owners don’t really have the awareness of really taking care of their dog as one should to a pet, which includes the matters of vaccinations.

Given that illustration, it doesn’t come off very shocking that the dog bite cases also occur rather more frequent, hence the unbalanced VAR demand and supply that is currently taking place on the island.

In some other cases, apparently the efforts in spreading the information and awareness related to the danger of dog bites leading to rabies has not been as well received as expected. One most recent example would be the case of Alfina Agustina from Bongan, Tabanan, who lost her life to the infection on May 20, 2015.
Her medical record states that she suffered all the signs and symptoms of a rabies positive patient, including the paranoia. The spokesman of Sanglah Regional Public Hospital stated that he deeply regretted that this woman never sought for medical attention, which in this case means a VAR shot after being bitten by a dog around six months ago.

The unfortunate situation of Bali not having enough VAR in stock is something that should be acknowledged by everyone who lives on the island. There were recent cases which just occurred within this week where patients had to go from one hospital to the other just to get the vaccine they needed after a dog bite.
Of course, after a thorough search and a series of phone calls there were still a few hospitals and rather larger clinics that still had some in stock, but then again through time, if there is no vaccine added to the current stock, the island will soon run out.

Given this information, in case of any animal bite that can transmit rabies please do consider the fact that finding a health facility that is able to accommodate you with the required vaccine will need more time. Knowing that the time window for this treatment is pretty narrow, you need to get yourself well informed with the options of hospitals on the island.

The most recent information from local forums suggests that all clinics and hospitals in Ubud are completely out of the vaccine.

Here is a list of a number of hospitals in South Bali in case you need to make contact related to this particular case of post animal bites vaccines.
