Denpasar: Your Healthy Dose of Short Films by Minikino

Minikino has some exciting news from the short film front, for all of you film lovers on the island! Minikino is Bali's first short film community which has commited to present "a healthy dose of short films" since 2002.  And this month, once again they have chosen a selection of incredible stories on screen, to be presented as the "healthy dose" for the short film screening at Irama Indah Mini Hall, on Saturday, May 30, 2015.

The three films selected for the movie screening are: "The Fox Exploits The Tiger's Might" directed by Lucky Kuswandi,  "Kisah Cinta yang Asu" (Love Story Not) directed by Yosep Anggi Noen and "Sendiri Diana Sendiri" (Following Diana) directed by Kamila Andini.

While all three films seem to be very exciting (you can check out more details about each film in the press release on the bottom of this page), "The Fox Exploits the Tiger's Might" is a current hit for it just got selected to compete in Le Semaine de La Critique in Cannes. The last time Indonesia had a taste of this achievement was in 1989 when Tjoet Nja Dien was selected to compete in this prestigious international film festival.

This achievement is certainly something to celebrate for the Indonesian film community, as this film passed the super tight competition of the 10 films to make it out of the 1.750 films submitted to the festival. Way to go, Indonesian film makers!

About the films and directors:
  “SENDIRI DIANA SENDIRI (FOLLOWING DIANA)”
Director: Kamila Andini
2015/ Color/ 39 minutes/ Indonesian with English Subtitle/ Digital

Synopsis
Diana, a 30-year-old housewife, lives with her husband and son at home, across the street from a building construction. She spends every day with her only child until her husband comes from work in the evening. One night, Diana’s husband presents her with a chart that reveals his shocking plan to share the little family with another woman.

Director’s Statement
Marriage always comes with complex issues, but I think there is one thing that everyone can relate to: feelings. This film follows Diana’s feelings – as a wife and a mother – when she’s dealing with her husband’s intention to have another wife.

After my marriage and the birth of my first daughter, I have always wanted to tell a story about a mother. Having spent more than a year being witness to acts of polygamy that involved the people around me, I believe this is a perfect story to explore the complexity of women in dealing with family life.

With this film, I want to show how I see the city I live in, the women in it, and their stories: what I really see, what I really hear, and the smothering problems I really feel..

“KISAH CINTA YANG ASU (LOVE STORY NOT)”
Director : Yosep Anggi Noen
2015/ Color/ 30 minutes/ Indonesian with English Subtitle/ Digital

Synopsis
A story on female strength and resilience that generates a new meaning on the subject of masculinity. Ning and Martha are two prostitutes from different class backgrounds. Ning works the street, while Martha tends to her clienteles in luxury hotels. They are entangled in a love triangle with Erik, a young man who plays the two women for his financial advantage. In their own ways, Ning and Martha take a stand to put Erik in his place.

Director’s Statement
Intentionally or otherwise, I always focus on women as the main characters for my films. Consequently, the men are dismissed as decorative, weak, and losers. In this film, I even play one myself: the loser male protagonist. My character is someone who is in a difficult position. He is essentially a weak man, who tries to maintain his dignity by showing off false power.

“THE FOX EXPLOITS THE TIGER’S MIGHT”
Director: Lucky Kuswandi
2015/ Color/ 24 minutes/ Indonesian with English Subtitle/ Digital

Synopsis:
The Fox Exploits The Tiger’s Might is about two preteen boys discovering their sexuality and the relation between power and sex, in the awkward social setting of a sleepy small town with a military base. David is the big-shot boastful son of a high-ranking officer, while Aseng’s family is an ethnic minority tobacco merchant who sells bootleg liquor.

Director’s Statement:
The relationship between military and sex is symbiotic. There is a sexual, fetishistic power in the uniform itself; how every square-inch of the fabric arouses a hyper masculinity culture. David is the son of a General. He is defined by power and aggression, yet it only created sexual repression in him. Meanwhile, Aseng whose life is repressed by the military in the Soeharto era, uses sex as a tool to revolt against his pressured condition. It is the play and transfer of power / sex between these two teenagers that I am very interested in exploring. The film is set in 1998, just after Soeharto won the rigged presidential election, further misusing his infinite power. Aseng is a Chinese Indonesian who becomes the victim of the regime, but he wishes to be the victimizer.  The film explores the idea of repression and how it brings out aggression, idealization and fantasy.
