WAB: The Rich and Colorful Blend of Sounds Performed in a One-Man Show!

WAB: The Rich and Colorful Blend of Sounds Performed in a One-Man Show!

A couple weeks ago, Bali was once again host to an international artist who was on his journey touring in South East Asia, all the way from France.

Alliance Française Bali in collaboration with Rumah Sanur Creative Hub pulled off an amazing job presenting WAB, chanson and beatbox artist live on the very own stage of Rumah Sanur itself!

Of course, we didn't want to miss out and got ourselves involved too, which was a very wise thing to do, considering how awesome the evening turned out to be!

Habib Julien, known by his stage name WAB, is an artist who creates his sound using his own voice, a microphone and a number of effect units. For the visual, whereas there is only one man on a stage, the sound that he produces kind of results in a situation where the richness of the audio doesn't match the visual.

WAB plays his voice like an instrument generating a flow of beatbox, bass, guitar and trumpet sounds, all making the best use out of the one ‘instrument' he plays, with the help of the looping pedals and effects.

In terms of genre and styles, WAB's colorful sound is pretty much a blend of elements of Chanson Française, Afro, Funk and Jazz with a touch of his very own particular improvisations which makes the sound carry an original identity in its heartfelt music and poetic lyrics.

Since WAB has an interest in a wide variety of genres, some other influences such as groove, reggae and hip-hop can also be noticed as an ingredient in some of his tunes.

WAB started his career as instrument-vocalist back in 2000, which was also the year he released his debut EP, ‘Welcome Into My Mind!'. He was one of the first artists in France to utilize the looping machine to make this one-man-show of numerous sounds possible.

Throughout his years of performing, WAB has regularly shared a stage with world-class well-respected singers such as Maceo Parker (USA), Michel Jonasz (France), Bernard Lavilliers (France), Babaz (Canada) to name a few.

During our interview with the artist after his set at Rumah Sanur, he humbly stated that he was very happy with his tour in South East Asia and felt blessed for the great response of Bali's crowd during his show as well as the workshop he held days prior to the show at Le Lycée Français de Bali, a French school located in the south of the island.

We are super excited to share the video of WAB's live performance at Rumah Sanur along with the exclusive interview, very soon! And in the mean time, we'd like you to enjoy his latest tracks which we will broadcast on our radio everyday for two weeks (April 4 - 17, 2016) at 7 AM, 12 PM, 7 PM and 12 AM Bali Time! Enjoy and spread the love; share the link!

Wolfram Klug and Tommy Mars during the recording of Burt the Nerd

The modern-day kind of magic can be defined as those amazing things that only happen to certain ones who dream big, work hard, truly believe in their goal, and on top of that all; those whose minds are creative enough to be inspired to have that one big dream to begin with. A dream just surreal enough to be certain that it is actually big ...

Tom & the Limits

As they describe their music as inspired by the small island, they prove that it does not have to mean they are the obligatory reggae band reigning over the beach. Tom & the Limits sound has ...
