The Tunes and Stories of Lovely Lisa Soul

The Tunes and Stories of Lovely Lisa Soul

Lisa Ruing also known as Lisa Soul is a beautiful singer, originally from the east part of Flores, an exotic island in East archipelago of Indonesia. Blessed with a powerful voice and a strong skill and wonderful feel in jazz, soul, funk and blues, Lisa has been one of the island's singers who have brought a great color as addition to the various bands and musicians based in Bali.

Through the years in her music career, Lisa has had a number of pretty remarkable experiences which started from a young age. When she was twelve years old, she was granted with the honor to sing Amazing Grace in front of Pope John Paul II, which definitely falls under the category of a once in a life time opportunity. Over a decade later, between 2002 and 2009, she toured around Asia with an American band she was playing with during that period of her journey.

In 2010, Lisa became a resident musician, really based on the island. She played her role as resident singer at a number of venues around the south part of the island; all of them known for their great taste and standard for the musicians they present on their live music stage. To name a few, Lisa Soul was known as one of the regular musicians at Ryoshi House of Jazz, Methis and Mozaic Beach Club. However, a couple years ago, she decided to quit her regular gigs and focus on her original music and own idealism in all her creative process.

Besides the list of her past regular shows, Lisa has also performed as part of the line-up presented in a number of well-respected music festivals both on the island as well as in Jakarta, such as Jazz Market by Sea (in 2011 and 2013), Jakarta Highland Gathering (in 2013 and 2014), Scotland in Concert (in 2013 and 2014), Bali Nirwana Jazz Series, Bali World Music Festival which was held a couple months ago, and more!

Aside from her beautiful voice and her soulful singing, Lisa is also known for her unique ethnic style in choosing her outfits, proudly carrying a local identity while pulling off an international standard of performing! She wears beautiful head dresses which are mostly traditional fabric from her original roots and people, from the island of Flores.

The last time we met her at the debut of Bali World Music Festival 2015, we could not help but notice that she was wearing such a beautiful traditional fabric both around her shoulders and wrapped around her head. Responding to our compliment, she proudly shared that the fabric was made by her own grandmother! She is one of those warm and humble artists that are just lovely to be around!

Lisa is currently working on her new original songs, and we are very excited to broadcast her debut single from the upcoming album for these two weeks of having her as our Artist of the Week (February 9 - February 21, 2016), every 7 AM, 12 PM, 7 PM and 12 AM Bali Time!

Don't forget to tune in for the interview and live session on Sunday, February 14, 2016, at 10 PM Bali Time as we are sure that we will get to hear more interesting facts and stories about Lisa's journey, and more details about the upcoming things to be excited for too! Stay tuned and updated, and enjoy!
