Matajiwa’s ‘SATU’: The Sounds of Experience, Experiment and Expression

Matajiwa’s ‘SATU’: The Sounds of Experience, Experiment and Expression

The super happening month of August has come and gone, but awesome things keep on rocking this island for sure! The fact that Bali is a good magnet for dope artists and musicians to come down and simply chill but also perform has created a music scene that never dies, as someone is always throwing their first or last or only gig of their Bali tour!

Matajiwa is back in town, baby!!! Hailing from the busy metropolitan of Jakarta, this time the epic duo consisting of Anda Perdana (guitar and vocals) and Reza Achman (drums and percussion) came in town on their Bali tour, Perjalanan Jiwa, with a brand new album up their sleeve! Hell, yeah!!! They are more than ready to share the “experience, experiment and expression” as poured their album, Satu which literally translates into One.  The title of this album is figuratively stands for Bhineka Tunggal Ika, the national philosophical slogan of Indonesia, which translates into “unity in diversity” of the people in this country.

Satu has been launched in two separate albums of CD I and CD II that both belong to the one debut album that also translates into one. They were each released independently in the end of 2013 and in June 2014. However this full album consisting of all the tracks from both of the parts above will be launched later this year.  The songs in this album are mostly passing the message around love, life, social issues and everything else that’s very human and ordinary. Except that when it comes to the sound produced by the combination of these two, nothing is quite close to the sense of ordinary.

Matajiwa; the eye of the soul; the ones who explore, create and perform in their very specific kind of dynamic that fits them best, are completely ‘allergic’ to anything that might lead to any kind of boredom; especially when it comes to their work and creativity as musicians. Don’t be fooled by the idea that it is a two men band either. Their music is soulful, beautiful and deep in their own unique way, and trust me, the two of them is totally enough to rock any stage any day! Lucky us, they have a list of gigs on the best island’s best live music venues at least once for every weekend all the way through September!

Fourth year in this journey of Matajiwa where these two expressive laid back guys somehow met and discover the crazy cool music chemistry they had, their music have been evolving as well. Their philosophy of “experience, experiment and expression” is not merely a cool headline or promotional slogan put together to sell the product. They have actually lived the band by practicing the three E-s, making all the process a lot of fun in the progress; both for them and the audience as well.

It was ridiculously fun having these guys over for an interview once again. And of course we’d love to share the fun along with their music! Tune in for their music all week long at 7 am, 12 am, 7 pm and midnight every day, and a full hour with interview on Sunday, starting at 4 pm! We’ll keep you posted on the video footage too!!!

Anda and Reza equals Matajiwa

We definitely still remember what a great time we had when this fantastic duo came in to visit our studio somewhere between their busy schedule during their Bali tour, a couple years ago! We had a cool interview, an awesome live session and not to mention enjoyed quite a few of their alive and kicking gigs on venues across the south of this ...

Paramitsha

Exciting week: Those of you who have been following us since day one probably recall our first "Artist of the Week" session. Tah Riq & Lizzie O' Keefe. When they still used to call themselves Peacockworld. Time flies! Well, first they change their name to Paramitsha. But most importantly, they just released a brilliant E.P.! One beautiful ...

Remember the Rain: An Alternative Indie Band from an Island Full of Sunshine!

Rain stands for soothing ideas. In many cultures rain symbolizes prosperity too. Rain represents the blessing of water and water stands for life. Dancing in the rain also sounds like something carefree, refreshing and it always seems like a terrific idea most of the time; releasing the inner child we all have and just embrace the drops of ...

Morelia: Rocking It Romantically with Their New Album!

Apparently we're not quite ready to move on from the good spirit of rock we have had here on Artist of the Week for the past couple weeks with Bandung's pumping sound of Sigmun! This week we have Morelia; a Bali-based indie band which carries this easy going yet awesome feel of alternative rock!   Morelia equals Sendry on ...

PitchBlackGold

It is a very rare breed of artist we have this week. Well, first of all, hip-hop artists are not exactly the kind of artists you meet a lot in Bali. And rare also are rappers like Kamau aka PitchBlack Gold: He is a multi-talented artist, a poet, a dancer, an activist, a humble and charismatic man, who knows how to bring the crowd to dance ...
